While restaurants and bars have been forced to scale back operations under Ontario’s state of emergency due to the novel coronavirus, other business haven’t faced the same orders.

Non-essential businesses like hair  and nail salons and clothing stores continue to operate despite people being asked to maintain social distancing in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these businesses involve close quarters between employees and customers.

Toronto’s medical officer for health wants them to change that.

“I’m asking non-essential businesses: hair and nail salons and clothing stores–I’m asking them to get behind social distancing,” said Dr. Eileen de Villa. “Do the right thing. Close (your) businesses–for now in order to support these social distancing efforts.”

As the number of cases continues to climb and the COVID-19-related deaths in the province now stands at two, people are being asked to continue an maintain social distancing.

Public health officials insist this is the best thing people can do to stall the spread of the virus so that it doesn’t overrun the healthcare system.
