Jack Harris, the NDP MP for Saint John’s East has announced he’s been diagnosed with cancer.

Harris posted a statement today saying he started treatment this week for a recently discovered lump on his neck that has proven to be cancerous.

He said the prognosis is good as it was discovered early. He’s going to have to avoid public appearances for the next few weeks.

“I am following doctors’ advice and have every confidence in the treatment plan and our health care system,” Harris said in a statement.

“During the COVID-19 emergency we are all expected to practice ‘social distancing,’ which is a very important public health measure to contain the spread of this virus, and I will be under an enhanced regime, working from home to avoid infection and to ensure continuity of the treatment plan.

Harris was elected M-P for the Newfoundland and Labrador riding three times before losing his seat in the 2015 election. He regained the seat in last year’s election.
