One of two Irish women, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976, has died.

Betty Williams was honoured along with Mariread Corrigan for galvanizing a mass movement to protest sectarian violence in Northern Ireland during the time known as “The Troubles.”

Williams was a grass-roots activist who’s movement mobilized tens of thousands of people to demand an end to the sectarian violence in Northern Ireland.

She died of pneumonia in Belfast at the age of 76.
