After consulting with city hall, Toronto Community Housing Corporation says it will be flexible and work with market rent and rent-geared-to-income tenants, whose employment income’s been affected by COVID-19.

For rent-geared-to-income households; which make up about 90% of T-C-H-C tenants, their rent will be recalculated based on job loss or layoff.

It will be adjusted or deferred.

For market rent tenants, T-C-H-C will consider various options to help them, which could include arranging for payment deferment plans that suit their situation the next few months.

Meanwhile, the city’s also issued a broad directive to over 200 social and affordable housing providers responsible for more than 33,000 units.

They’ve been told to be flexible, exercise discretion and to work with households whose employment income’s been affected.

After Toronto Mayor John Tory held a conference call with major private residential landlords, many promised to help tenants who need it.

But at the same time, the city says ”far too many” have not communicated anything to reassure anxious tenants with next month’s rent just days away.

While the city has no power to direct landlords, the mayor says he expects them to proactively communicate with their tenants.
