Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Ottawa is moving ahead with the private sector on deals to buy ventilators, masks and test kits.
One company, Toronto-based Thornhill Medical, is making 500 ventilators and hopes to have them ready within weeks.
The government has also finalized a contract AMD Medicom Inc. in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, ordering 157-million surgical masks and 60-million N-95 protective masks.
In addition, Trudeau says the government’s signed letters of intent with five other companies to retool their facilities to produce or expand production of medical supplies.
DNA tech firm Precision Biomonitoring Inc. of Guelph plans to make virus test kits once Health Canada’s given the go ahead.
Calgary-based chemical solution maker Fluid Energy Group Ltd. will make hand sanitizer.
Irving Oil Ltd. of Saint John is revamping a blending and packing facility to also make hand sanitizer.
Protective gear maker Calko Group of Montreal will ramp up production of masks, gowns and other medical protective equipment.
Stanfield’s Ltd. of Truro, Nova Scotia, known for its underwear, will make medical gowns and protective wear for healthcare professionals.
