When planning was underway to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, some of the resources in long term care was shifted to the hospitals.

Zoomer Radio News has learned from Ontario’s Long Term Care Minister, Dr. Merilee Fullerton, that the long term care sector was called on to help relieve some of the capacity in hospitals to prepare for a surge in patients.

She says “that was in process and we were doing as much as we could to help the hospitals and the acute care sector.”

Fullerton claims that at that time, long term care was at 99 percent capacity while hospitals were over capacity.

Long term care homes in Ontario have since been devastated by the COVID-19 crisis while hospitals are handling the situation well.

Meantime, Toronto’s medical officer of health says the city will use a new technology tool to track and share COVID-19 data rather than the province’s outdated information system.

As we reported Thursday, the official tally of COVID-19 deaths in the province is about fifty percent less than the actual tally of regional health information.

Dr. Eileen de Villa says the new tool, a web based secure system, allows the city team to quickly and easily document each individual case efficiently and share data with the provincial ministry of health.
