”The question really is ‘Were our long-term care homes just an after thought for our elected officials?’ and I think the poll indicates that many of our members feel that way.”
Marissa Lennox, Chief Policy Officer for CARP – A New Vision of Aging – talking about the results of a recent survey by the Zoomers advocacy group with Libby Znaimer on Zoomer Radio’s ”Fight Back”.
”In many ways our hospitals were prepared.  They were the ones where all of the protected equipment was really reserved.  We do know that training and they were staffing up, lessons learned from SARS were applied in our hospital settings and we really just didn’t see the same for our long-term care homes,” Lennox told ‘Fight Back’.
Highlights of the survey of 5,000 CARP members:
Nearly one-in-five live in or have a loved one in long-term care; of those almost one-in-four are in a home with an outbreak.
Eight-in-ten do not think the province was proactive in preparing in long-term care homes.
Seven-in-ten say the government’s response has been less than good (fair or poor).
Six-in-ten rate government funding for staff in long-term care as poor with adequate staffing the top concern regarding long-term care right now.
