It’s the biggest celebration of beer in the world.
But not this year.
Oktoberfest, which typically draws some 6 million visitors to the Bavaria capital of Munich, has been cancelled, another victim of the pandemic.
The world-famous annual celebration was to have run from September 19 to October 4, but the government of Bavaria says the risk is simply too great this year. The Governor says it’s not possible to guarantee physical distancing for participants and protection of workers.
The only other times Munich’s Oktoberfest has been cancelled was during the two world wars, a time of hyper-inflation in Germany in the 1920s and during two cholera outbreaks in the 18-hundreds.
