Saying mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada, but happening more often, the prime minister has announced the immediate banning of ”assault-style weapons”.
Justin Trudeau says this comes by way of a cabinet order, that does not forbid owning any of the 1,500 ”military style” firearms and their variants.
There’s a two-year amnesty period for current owners with a compensation program to follow, once a bill is passed in Parliament.
Trudeau says these weapons were made for just one purpose; to kill the most people in the shortest amount of time, such as in Nova Scotia less than two weeks ago, Montreal in 1989, along with many in between, including Toronto’s Greektown two summers ago.
”These tragedies reverberate still.  They shape our identity.  They stain our conscience.  They make adults out of children.  And the heartbreaking truth is, they’re happening more often than they once did,” Trudeau adds.
The prime minister has said the government was about to introduce stricter gun control legislation in March, but that was delayed when the pandemic hit.
