Saying it’s heartbreaking to think of seniors left in understaffed, under-resourced nursing homes, with virtually no rules to protect them, the provincial Opposition leader is calling for an inquiry.

Andrea Horwath wants it to include why the system was in crisis before COVID-19, how the response to the pandemic left seniors so vulnerable and an examination of the future of for-profit homes.

”I oppose profits being made by corporations in long-term care.  Let’s lay all the facts on the table in a thorough and independent public inquiry,” said the NDP leader.

”This inquiry could be the start of putting Ontario on a new, better, safer and more dignified path.

Just yesterday, Long-Term Care Minister Merrilee Fullerton announced there would be a review once we’re on the other side of the pandemic.

She says the ”system is broken” and has ”endured years of neglect.”

The minister does not provide any details of what it will look like, only that ”all forms of review are on the table.”
