Just over a week after announcing the city was working on a new program to provide more space for walking, biking and running, Mayor John Tory has announced ‘Active TO’ will see 57-kilometres of ”Quiet Streets”.
The initiative features neighbourhood streets where traffic calming measures will be in place to encourage local vehicles only, so roads can be shared with physically-active residents.
The first locations being installed today included Kensington Market (bordered by Spadina, Dundas, August and Nassau Avenue), Shaughnessy Blvd. between Van Horne Avenue and Havenbrook Blvd., and Havenbrook Blvd. between Shaughnessy and Manorpark Court.
The list of current and planned Quiet Streets will be updated as locations are added.
In addition, and for this holiday weekend ONLY, eastbound Lake Shore between Windermere and Stadium Road, Bayview Avenue from Mill Street to Rosedale Valley Road, and River Street from Bayview to Gerrard will be fully closed.
Future weekend closures will be announced as they’re finalized.
