Unable to contain the spread of COVID-19, Downsview Long Term Care Centre in North York and River Glen Haven Nursing Home in Sutton will be managed for the time being by hospitals.

The province has announced Humber River Hospital will manage the facility in Downsview which has 52 deaths, 12 more than just a week ago.

Southlake Regional Health Centre will oversee the home in Sutton, where 20 have died.

Despite receiving hospital support for weeks, the government says the homes have not been able to stop the virus from spreading.

The temporary management orders last 90 days but can be extended if the government feels it’s necessary.  

Meanwhile, a recent survey by Angus Reid Institute found two-thirds of Canadians (66%) says government should take over long-term care homes. 

Currently, long-term care falls under provincial jurisdiction. 

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said once the pandemic’s over, Ottawa will consider a request to place it under the Canada Health Act to ensure consistent standards.
