The former Minneapolis police officer, seen on video kneeling on the neck of a handcuffed black man, has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
In the video, Derek Chauvin is seen kneeling on George Floyd’s neck until he becomes motionless while three other officers ignore bystanders’ shouts to get off him.
The prosecutor says the investigation continues into the other three who were also fired, but that authorities ”felt it appropriate to focus on the most dangerous perpetrator.”
Monday’s incident set off three days of protests, including looting and fires.
Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney General William Barr says he’s ”confident justice will be served.”
The Justice Department and FBI are conducting an investigation to determine if federal civil rights laws were broken.
