After repeatedly saying he would not, Premier Doug Ford now says he’s ”now comfortable” in asking health officials to ”look at a regional approach for a staged reopening.”
He adds it would be one option as the province moves into Stage Two of the reopening of the economy.
”I know other jurisdictions have used this regional approach.  I want to look at how this has gone in other areas, what lessons we can learn,” added Ford.
Two-thirds of the province’s COVID-19 cases are in the GTA.
”But let me be very clear, I’m not prepared to take unneccessary risks when it comes to our health and safety.  We will continue to take a measured, gradual approach to reopening, based on the advice of our command table.”
Ford’s comments came as he unveiled testing would be expanded to include specific workers, such as all residents and staff in retirement homes and those in long-term care a second time, first responders in Toronto and their families, staff in select hospitals and their families, LCBO workers, as well as staff and inmates in some correctional facilities.
”Ramping up testing means that we’ll find more cases.  And that’s okay because finding more cases means we can contain the spread faster.  We can’t manage what we can’t measure.”
Meanwhile, Health Minister Christine Elliott says ”because of the considerable efforts of every Ontarian, we have entered the post-peak phase of our fight,” as we adapt to our new normal.
