The federal government’s recommending tighter rules for claiming the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, proposing legislation that would threaten imposing fines and jail time on those who intentionally lie.
This comes as the Liberals face pressure from the Tories to weed out fraudulent claims and urge people return to work, while on the other side the NDP feels the bill would hurt the very people it was designed to help.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government acted quickly to get money out to desperate Canadians early on in the pandemic, and that anyone who received money in error because they were not clear on the rules, will simply have to repay it.
”We’re not looking to punish people who made honest mistakes,” Trudeau adds.
Recent federal figures show over 8-million applied for CERB with over $43-billion paid out as of a week ago.
