There is a call to change the name of Dundas Street in Toronto.
Hundreds of people have signed an online petition for the name change because Dundas Street is named after Scottish politician Henry Dundas, who is said to have opposed the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in the 18th century.
Toronto resident Andrew Lochhead created the petition on Tuesday, in light of the recent protests against police brutality and anti-black racism.
Toronto Mayor John Tory said this morning, there’s a right way of going about change but not based on an online petition.
“Find of way of going about looking at this different names and statues in a thoughtful way, perhaps based on some expert advice from a historian for example,” Tory told CP24, “as opposed to a Facebook petition, which are terrific, but they’re not about the way you make public policy decisions or decisions like this.”
In recent weeks, a number of cities in the U.S. have removed statues of figures with connections to the slave trade, while other statues have been toppled by protesters.
