The World Health Organization on Sunday reported the largest single day global increase in COVID-19 cases at more than 183,000.
A statement from the UN Health Agency says Brazil led the way with nearly 54,771 daily cases, the U.S. next at nearly 36,617, and over 15,400 came in in India.
Experts say rising case counts are a result of multiple factors including more widespread testing as well as broader infection.
There is some good news. Infections slowed in China and South Korea, suggesting some progress in stemming their newest outbreaks.
South Korea reported 17 new cases of COVID-19 Monday, while nine new cases were reported in Beijing; the lowest daily amount recorded in the Chinese capital in more than a week.
Overall during the pandemic, the WHO reports 8,708,008 cases (183,020 in the last 24 hours, with 461,715 related deaths worldwide, with a daily increase of 4,743.
Here in Canada, the total number of confirmed cases is just over 101,337 with 8,430 related deaths.
