Mayor John Tory says that’s when the 50 cameras installed across the city will start issuing tickets.
”Automated speed enforcement is one of the many tools that are in our ‘Vision Zero’ tool box, that is intended to reduce speeding in identified areas in an efficient and non-invasive manner,” said Tory.
”Remember these initial 50 zones were chosen as priority areas for increased attention to safety. A lot of them being around schools for example.”
City council endorsed using speed cameras after the province gave municipalities the option last December.
The cameras were installed and the city began sending warning letters to drivers during the 90-day pre-ticketing period.
Ticketing was to start in April but was delayed by the pandemic.
Just in February and March, city staff sent out over 25,000 warning letters.
