Texas had been one of the more forerunners as the U.S. began reopening from the COVID-19 pandemic.
It seems, it was all premature.
Governor Greg Abbott has ordered all bars to close at noon today and restaurants must reduce capacity to 50% as of Monday. The move comes as Texas sees a rapid surge of COVID-19 cases.
Since the start of June, cases in the state have doubled and hospitalizations have tripled.
“At this time, it is clear that the rise in cases is largely driven by certain types of activities, including Texans congregating in bars. The actions in this executive order are essential to our mission to swiftly contain this virus and protect public health,” Abbott said.”
Thousands of new cases are being reported every day in the state.
The announcement comes a day after the Abbott said he was pausing planned further reopenings.
