The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say an armed man has been arrested after accessing the grounds at Rideau Hall.
A strong RCMP presence was on the grounds of the Governor General’s residence this morning. Ottawa Police were also on the scene to help divert traffic away from the area.
At least one armoured vehicle was on scene as the operation was underway. People were advised to stay away from the area.
No details were immediately released to explain the major police presence but they promised there would be an update to come later on Thursday.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family have also been living on the grounds at Rideau Cottage as the Prime Minister’s residence at 24 Sussex Drive awaits renovation work.
The RCMP say neither the Prime MInister nor the Governor General were present at the time of the incident.
They haven’t released the suspect’s name at this time as charges are pending.
