Starting Monday July 6th, Toronto’s 50 automated speed enforcement cameras begin issuing tickets to drivers caught speeding.

Ticketing was supposed to start in April, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

Mayor John Tory says it was a long and hard fight for provincial permission to use speed camera technology to help protect pedestrians and crackdown on speeding in the city’s neighbourhoods.

He says automated speed enforcement is one example of the data driven actions being taken to achieve Vision Zero road safety goals.

“They are located almost exclusively in school zones or community safety zones,” Tory told CP24 on Monday, “So these are places where you would least want to have people speeding. And when we had them on test mode before ticketing began today, we had 25,000 warning letters sent out, people going as fast as 100-plus kilometres per hour zone, so that’s pretty crazy driving that we need to stamp out in the interest of the safety of children and all pedestrians.”

If a vehicle is detected speeding, the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a ticket for an amount between $5 and $12 per kilometre over the posted limit.
