The leading U.S. infectious disease expert says he is cautiously optimistic that a COVID-19 vaccine with some degree of effectiveness will be successfully developed by the end of the year or the beginning of 2021.
Dr. Anthony Fauci says Moderna‘s “messenger RNA” vaccine is one of several in the trial pipeline.
“Although you can never ever predict with any certainty whether a vaccine is going to be safe and effective,” Fauci explained remotely at a United Nations event, “the early data on these trials have provided cautious optimism that we will be successful, at least in developing a vaccine with some degree of efficacy by the end of the year.”
Fauci says Moderna’s vaccine will go into Phase 3 trials “sometime at the end of July and then others will follow in August, September and October.”
