Toronto’s mayor says if we’re going to avoid a backslide in COVID-19 cases, restaurant owners need to ensure there is physical distancing among customers.

Management at MARBL Restaurant on King Street West has released a statement after video went viral showing crowding at their establishment on Friday night.

The statement says, “when thunderstorms began in the middle of the service we were forced to bring the group under our covering to finish their evening.”

It goes on to say, “this was an anomaly and not a reflection of the rest of the evening.”

But Toronto Mayor John Tory says the weather is not an excuse for failing to follow the guidelines which are put in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

“I hope that all businesses including all of these bars and restaurants and others will be very careful to follow the rules because that’s what it’s going to take for businesses and people to follow the rules whether we’re in Stage 2 or Stage 3 if we’re going to avoid the kind of backsliding that Dr. de Villa (Toronto’s chief medical officer of health) made reference to as a possibility if we don’t follow the rules and continue the good work that everybody has been doing,” Tory told Monday’s news conference.

Toronto will not be entering Stage 3 of the province’s economic recovery plan on Friday. Neither will the rest of the GTA, Hamilton, Niagara and Windsor-Essex.

But the remaining areas of Ontario are clear to go to the next phase on Friday.

The PCs at Queens Park have decided nightclubs are not yet safe to reopen except for the purpose of serving food or drinks in accordance with conditions that apply to restaurants and bar – meaning patrons must be seated when eating or drinking.

Also this Friday, regions in Stage 3 can have indoor gatherings of up to 50, while outdoor gatherings may have as many as 100 people.

And starting July 27th, all child-care centres across the province may have 15 children per room.
