The day after the House of Commons finance committee began the first parliamentary probe into how WE Charity was picked to manage the Canada Student Service Grant program, the Commons ethics committee is following suit.

Conservative members want copies of all records related to any speaking appearances at WE events involving the prime minister, his wife, his mother or his brother.   

The committee’s put off that decision to next week.

Tory ethics critic Michael Barrett says the government’s ”shifting narrative” on who was responsible for putting WE forward for the deal makes an investigation necessary.

”We need to pin down all of the facts as soon as possible so we can assure Canadians that Parliament is exercising its function as a check against the executive branch of government,” added Barrett.

New Democrat Charlie Angus says he’s not interested in dragging Trudeau family members before the committee but believes an alleged ethical lapse of this kind demands MPs take a closer look.  

The scandal has prompted the ethics commissioner to begin investigating Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Bill Morneau.  

Both failed to rescue themselves from the decision-making process on the aborted deal with WE Charity to run the program.  

WE later decided to pull out.
