The Trudeau Liberals’ COVID-19 emergency wage subsidy has been extended until, at least, December.

Bill C-20 has passed in a special sitting of the Senate, after the package was approved by MPs in the House of Commons last week.

The legislation also includes a one-time $600 payment for people with disabilities, and extensions to certain legal deadlines disrupted by the pandemic.

Senator Scott Tannas says the extended wage subsidy provides “a bridge” from pandemic panic to recovery.

Other senators were more critical of the Liberals’ handling of the COVID-19 crisis, especially the now-cancelled deal that handed management of a student-volunteering program to WE Charity.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has agreed to appear Thursday before the Commons finance committee to answer questions about the WE controversy.

He and Finance Minister Bill Morneau have both apologized for failing to recuse themselves from the decision to give the contract to WE Charity, since both have family members associated with the organization.
