With public opinion polls showing Joe Biden in the lead, Donald Trump’s floating the idea of delaying the November 3 election.
The suggestion came in a tweet that included unsubstantiated allegations increased mail-in voting due to the pandemic will result in fraud.
”2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history,” Trump said on Twitter.
”It will be a great embarrassment to the USA.  Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote ???”
The tweet came soon after word the U.S. economy shrank by 33% in the second quarter  – the worst quarterly decline ever.
Reaction was just as swift and predicatable among Democrats.
”This would be nothing less than a coup against the people of the United States and the constitution,” tweeted California congresswoman Jackie Speier.
Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy accused Trump of ”attempting to undermine the legitimacy of the election.
Top Republicans were quick to dismiss Trump’s suggestion.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the election date is set in stone while House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy says it ”should go forward” as planned.
Dates of U.S. federal elections are enshrined in law and would require an act of Congress to change.
