Imagine living with the threat of COVID-19 for several years.

Canada’s chief public health officer says this is the reality, with or without a vaccine.

“We’re planning as a public health community that we’re going to have to manage this pandemic, certainly over the next year, but certainly planning for the longer term over the next two to three years, during which the vaccine may play a role, but we don’t know yet,” Dr. Theresa Tam told a Tuesday news conference.

Dr. Tam says a safe and effective vaccine is a very important aspect of the COVID-19 response, but it is not the “silver bullet” that will end the health crisis.

She says Canadians need to realize that the development of a vaccine does not mean life will immediately go back to how it was before the pandemic.

Tam says the public health measures we currently have in place, such as social distancing and wearing a mask in indoor public spaces, are going to have to continue in the long-run.
