Today marks 75 years since Japan officially signed its unconditional surrender that ended the second world war.

Wanted: Eyewitnesses to the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri - Pacific - Stripes

The USS Missouri hosted the formal surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay. The massive battleship hosted thousands of sailors, soldiers, marines, journalists and other dignitaries. Representatives from nine allied nations attended the brief ceremony where the surrender documents were signed.

It’s known as VJ Day in some countries.

Others mark August 15th as the war’s end as that’s the day Japan announced their surrender.

That surrender came just days after the U.S. detonated the two atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki and just hours after the Soviet Union announced its war declaration on Japan.
