With two small Canadian flags strapped to either side of his walker, George Markow completed his goal to walk 100-kilometres around his Newmarket seniors residence by his 100th birthday to raise money for COVID-19 research.
The 99-year-old Second World War vet has raised nearly $47,000 for Sunnybrook Research Institute and Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation’s COVID-19 Action Fund.
Although he’s attained a goal he set for himself in April, Markow plans to keep walking because he enjoys it, and also hopes to continue raising money to help fund research for a vaccine.
The immigrant of Finnish descent says he wanted to give back to Canada for being so good to him.
Markow says he was inspired by Captain Tom Moore in the U.K., who walked and raised millions for the National Health Service and has since been knighted by the Queen.
George turns 100 April 14 next year.
