New electric vehicle models are coming to Ford’s Oakville plant as part of a tentative three-year deal reached with Unifor.
National President Jerry Dias tweets ”We are now positioned to be the jewel in Ford’s crown, and a key part of Ford’s future success transitioning to greener technology.  As an organization, we’ve hit a home run.”
As part of the agreement $1.95-billion will be invested in the automaker’s Canadian facilities, including $1.8-billion to retool the Oakville plant where five electric vehicle models will be built.
Dias says the balance of the investment will stabilize employment at the engine plant in Windsor and likely create new opportunities.
The 6,300 workers at Ford will vote on the deal this weekend.
Once approved, this deal will set the tone for upcoming talks with General Motors and Fiat Chrysler.
