Just before government officials were to meet to discuss tightening a new countrywide lockdown, Israel reported a new record number of daily COVID-19 cases Wednesday.
There were 6,861 new infections as the outbreak shows no signs of slowing.
Israel has one of the world’s highest rates on a per-capita basis and officials say hospitals are quickly approaching capacity.
Ahead of the meting, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would seek a ”broad general closure and significant tightening of restrictions immediately,” including closure of large parts of the economy, his office said.
Meanwhile, a new survey finds only 27% of Israelis trust Netanyahu to lead the country’s efforts to fight the pandemic.
That compares with 57.5% who felt that way in early April.
