It is a request made by CARP members, soon to be fulfilled by the governing Liberals in Ottawa.
In a one line commitment buried in the throne speech, the federal government says it will soon introduce a free, automatic tax filing system for simple returns.
It’s a policy change meant to provide government benefits to qualified people who don’t collect them now because they skip filing their taxes.
The promise could help hundreds of thousands of low and fixed income Canadians, including seniors, access benefits that are only paid to people who file tax returns.

By law, only people who owe taxes are required to file a return each year with the Canada Revenue Agency.
Under the proposed change, the CRA would draw up paperwork for simple returns to eliminate a bureaucratic burden which has been an obstacle to financial support.
