The Trudeau government has agreed to purchase 7.9-million rapid COVID test devices from American company Abbott. as soon as they’re approved by Health Canada.
The government also says other contracts for rapid tests could also be signed soon.
Meanwhile, Health Canada has new advice for companies rushing to develop rapid tests.
The agency’s chief medical adviser says reviewing those already submitted for approval is top priority.
Dr. Supriya Sharma says it’s critical to ensure they’re accurate and don’t produce a large number of false results.
She also points out Canada’s approval process is similar to other countries’ and that some tests already rolled out elsewhere have not been submitted for Canadian approval.
The Official Opposition’s critical of what it calls government inaction.
”We support a full and complete regulatory review process but we also support the government figuring out ways to ensure that that happens within a period of time that can meet the needs of everyday Canadians,” argues Conservative health critic Michelle Rempel Garner.
