Canada Revenue has received more than 240,640 applications for the new COVID emergency response benefit despite some technical glitches on the first day.
The Canada Recovery Benefit, which will pay $500-a-week for up to 26-weeks, open to those who are self-employed or don’t qualify for employment insurance.
It’s part of several new programs meant to replace the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), now discontinued, which has paid out $81.64-billion to 8.9-million Canadians.
In addition to the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB), there’s the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB) and Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB).
The caregiver benefit is for those who miss work because they must care for a child under the age of 12 due to school or daycare closures, or because the child or family members are required to quarantine because they’ve caught COVID-19 or may have been exposed.
It will provide $500-a-week for up to 26 weeks for those unable to work for at least half of the week.
Ottawa expects around 700,000 households will apply for this benefit.
There’s also a sick-leave benefit that pays up to $1,000 over two weeks to those who cannot work because they’ve caught the virus or must self-isolate because of COVID-19.
