Saying there’s no place in Toronto for racism of any kind, Mayor John Tory is calling on residents to take part in a social media campaign to fight anti-East Asian racism amid the pandemic.
Since the start of COVID-19, racist comments and incidents have surged around the world.
The city of Toronto is not immune.
According to the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice, 26% of more than 600 reported racist incident in this country have taken place in Toronto.
”It is important that we call out this kind of behaviour when we see it,” says Tory.
The city’s teaming up with the organization and community partners to confront anti-East Asian stereotypes and myths.
The city’s released a video showing the impact they’ve had on those of East Asian descent; nearly 370,000 of whom live in Toronto.
