WestJet will soon stop flying to Moncton, Fredericton, Sydney, Charlottetown and Quebec City while drastically reducing service to Halifax and St. John’s.
The Calgary-based airline’s also suspending operations between Toronto and Quebec City.
The routes will be cancelled as of November 2, and also mean the cutting of 100 corporate and operational support positions.
The moves mean WestJet’s service to Atlantic Canada will be based out of Halifax, with daily flights to Toronto, Calgary and St. John’s at least once a day.
A year ago there were 28 different flights across Atlantic Canada.
As of next month there’ll be only three.
Except for the Halifax to St. John’s flight, no city east of Montreal will have a WestJet flight.
All this comes amid the pandemic which has essentially grounded air travel.
WestJet normally has about two-million customers a month but since COVID-19 hit in March, it’s sold only about one-million tickets in total.
