Saying the province is staring down the barrel of another lockdown amid rising COVID cases, and a day after alarming projections, Premier Doug Ford has announced lower thresholds to its colour-coded framework.
This change puts several regions- Toronto, Peel, Halton, York and Hamilton-into the RED-CONTROL stage which will now be triggered when the region hits a weekly rate of 40 cases per 100,000 lowered from 100 cases.
“Limit your trips outside the home except essential reasons like going to work, school, getting groceries, keeping a medical appointment or exercising and work remotely where possible,” said Ford at his daily pandemic briefing.
And families are being told not to visit any other households or allow visitors to their homes. Toronto enters RED zone Saturday, joining Peel Region, while York, Halton, and Hamilton move there Monday. Also Monday, Brant, Durham, Niagara, Ottawa, Waterloo, Eastern Ontario, and Wellington-Dufferin move to the ORANGE-RESTRICT zone. Doug Ford is pleading with those celebrating Diwali this weekend to connect virtually and not visit other households.
In responding to a call from the Ontario Nurses’ Association for a 28-day lock down in red zones to protect long term care, Ford isn’t ruling out anything.
“Everything is on the table, I’ve been decisive since day one, and I’m going to continue being decisive,” said Ford. “When I get the green light and Dr. Williams says the table has come back and they want a lockdown, I will lock down quicker than you can blink your eyes.”

In reacting to the new measures, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says we need to see more urgency from Ford.
“What we saw was Mr. Ford protecting himself, his health minister, and his most senior health adviser when he should have been protecting the health of Ontarians,” said Horwath.
