Ontario’s Education Minister has hinted schools may be closed for an extended Christmas break but when asked how parents should plan for this, Premier Doug Ford says “let’s wait and see.”

Education Minister Stephen Lecce

“Well, I know the minister is sitting down with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, I know he’ll be coming out very shortly to make an announcement but out goal, all of us I think as a province, what I’m hearing out there is parents want their kids in school and it’s working well,” said Ford.
The Premier points out that only one school is currently closed due to COVID and that a Christmas break plan will be revealed in a week or two.
Meantime, critics say a comment by Ontario’s top doctor about gatherings over the holidays is akin to a Christmas miracle! Dr. David Williams has said he’s hopeful regions will be in the GREEN- PREVENT category by December 25th, the most lenient on the new COVID colour-coded framework.
Both the Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott defended his comments by saying Dr. Williams is a positive person who looks at the glass half full.
“I don’t think it’s something we can count on at this point and we are watching the data every day, we’re looking to see what’s going to happen in those areas that have been put into the CONTROL situation particularly Peel and Toronto,” said Elliott. “Dr. Williams and the team will be coming out with more guidance for us all to follow in the next several weeks.”
