The head of the Ontario Hospital Association is warning people that an already dire situation at the province’s hospitals could become much worse over the coming months.
Anthony Dale calls the current situation “totally unsustainable.” He says one fifth of the province’s entire intensive care capacity is now given up to COVID-19 patients.
Back in November, when the caseload in ICUs in the province surpassed 150, health officials warned that’s when they may start cancelling elective surgeries.
In today’s latest update, the province reports there are 322 patients in ICU. That’s down from 336 patients on New Year’s Day.
Dale warns that January and February could be “brutal” in Ontario’s hospitals.
The wait is on to see if there is a surge of patients who may have ignored public health guidelines and celebrated Christmas and New Year’s Eve in group settings.
