President-elect Joe Biden is on course for a pre-inauguration gift thanks to voters in Georgia.
The state went to the polls in a pair of Senate runoffs last night and one has been called in favour of the Democratic candidate with the other Democrat on course for another win.
Before his race was officially called, Pastor Rafael Warnock claimed victory over incumbent Kelly Loeffler.
“We were told that we couldn’t win this election,” Warnock said in a video posted to Facebook. “We proved that, with hope, hard work and the people by our side, anything is possible.”
In the other race, Democratic challenger John Ossoff holds a narrow lead over incumbent David Perdue.
A Democrat sweep in the races would mean a 50-50 split in the next Senate. With vice-President elect Kamala Harris the tiebreaking vote, that means the Democrats would take over the majority.
