Singer Gary U.S. Bonds was born on this day in Jacksonville, Florida. Gary Anderson was discovered by Frank Guida, the owner of Norfolk records, while  singing in a doo-wop group called the Turks. Guida got him to record a track called ‘New Orleans’. When the record was printed, Gary saw to his surprise that the artist name read “U.S. Bonds.” From that point onwards his releases would be credited to Gary U.S. Bonds.

While celebrating the success of ‘New Orleans’ Bonds recorded ‘Quarter to Three’ with Gene “Daddy G” Barge. There are a number of rumours surrounding this track, including that it was recorded by accident. Bonds denies this, however he does admit that the rambunctious party sounds were authentic.
