Health Quality Ontario has just released a new report on emergency department performance in Ontario. The report finds that overall, wait times in Ontario’s emergency departments are getting shorter, but when you take a closer look at the data, some troubling trends emerge. Patients may spend hours and sometimes even days lying on stretchers in emergency examination rooms or hallways. This is especially troubling because an emergency department could be strained further as we head into flu season, or if a hospital nearby has to close its emergency department. Dr. Joshua Tepper from Health Quality Ontario weighs in on the report.
