Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Marion Joppe, Professor in the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management at the University of Guelph, Timothy Sly, an epidemiologist and professor at the School of Public Health at Ryerson University and Will McAleer, Executive Director at the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada.
Yesterday, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially classified Covid-19 as a pandemic- the first time they’ve done so since H1N1 (swine flu) in 2009. This week also saw Canada’s first death from the virus- an 80-year-old man from British Columbia.
In a bold move, U.S. President Donald Trump announced in his address to the nation this week that the U.S. will be banning travel of most Europeans to its country for 30 days. A move that top European Union officials condemned and explained was not a decision that was made in consultation with them.
Canadian travelers and those who are planning to cancel their trips are going through hurdles as they deal with their insurance companies, and the virus’ classification as a pandemic could influence Canadians’ travel behaviours and the tourism industry in general. Libby and guests assess these latest developments.
