STRATEGY PANEL: STIFF PENALTIES FOR CERB FRAUD, TPS CHIEF MARK SAUNDERS RESIGNS AND MORE-JUNE 9 2020

The federal government is planning to legislate stiff penalties for Canadians who fraudulently use the CERB – these would range from fines to six months in jail for people who make false or misleading claims or fail to declare income they made while applying for or collecting the benefit. It’s a far cry from the government’s previous stance when it reportedly ordered the CRA to ignore red flags and just get the money out the door as fast as possible. In other news, Finance minister Bill Morneau is promising a fiscal update sometime this summer. And of course, yesterday we were all surprised by the resignation of Mark Saunders – Toronto’s first Black police chief. He cited mainly wanting more time with his family – an explanation that always raises questions!
