Nominations for Toronto City Council and the school boards re-opened this morning following yesterday’s decision by the Ontario court of Appeal to put on hold last week’s court decision ruling Premier Doug Ford’s bill 5 as unconstitutional. There will be a 25 ward election for Toronto on October 22nd, rather than the original plan of 47 wards. Mayor John Tory is promising to keep fighting for the city and has given the city’s lawyers clear direction to continue to fight. There’s no telling how long the appeals process could take. Nominations for the smaller city council end tomorrow afternoon at 4:30. In the meantime Premier Doug Ford’s plan to remake Toronto’s waterfront has sparked interest in the gambling industry, and a downtown casino could be back on the table as part of a redevelopment of Ontario Place. However, there have been no formal discussions with the province’s private gambling partners about an additional Toronto casino, which would need to overcome significant hurdles to proceed. Libby speaks with THE Vice-President of Government Relations,Sutherland Corp Aleem Kaanji and Vice President, Public Affairs at Hill + Knowlton, Kim Wright.
