New Democrats are setting up a Black caucus of five MPPs in what leader Andrea Horwath says is a historic first for any political party in Ontario. The goal is to ensure that “Black perspectives are meaningfully incorporated into the work that New Democrats do on every file — from finance to health care, education, housing the arts and beyond,” said Laura Mae Lindo (Kitchener Centre), chair of the group and anti-racism critic. Horwath was proud to claim this is the first time a party has elected enough black MPPs to form a caucus. Lindo said the caucus will ensure perspectives from black communities are incorporated into “every file,” and they will work with communities to address systemic anti-black racism “by proposing policy solutions that will help build a future of equity, justice, respect and safety.” The caucus was established after people attended round table discussions at Queen’s Park hosted by the NDP. The other members of the black caucus are: York South-Weston MPP Faisal Hassan, Toronto – St. Paul’s MPP Jill Andrew, Brampton North MPP Kevin Yarde and Beaches – East York MPP Rima Berns-McGown. Libby speaks with Black Caucus Member – MPP Jill Andrew,Toronto – St. Paul’s as well as Brittany Andrew-Amofah, Senior Policy and Research Analyst at the Broadbent Institute.
