The Ontario PC government’s cuts to legal aid directly impacts marginalized communities across the province that rely on these services in the courts. Legal Aid Ontario is the body that supplies these services. The government, under Ontario Premier Doug Ford, cut the body’s funding by 30 percent in April of this year. In dollars, the cuts have amounted to $133 million. The mayor says it’s another provincial cutback that will disproportionately hurt Toronto. Some specialty clinics in areas like tenants’ rights will see their budgets slashed as well as some funding for lawyers representing low income clients.
