12:15pm EST | Councillor Sarah Doucette, Ward 13 Parkdale-High Park

GUEST – GFB Credit expert, Laurie Campbell, CEO Credit Canada Debt Solutions

TOPIC – Living debt free.
INFO – Living Debt Free is a dream for many people but can be a reality… Steps to ponder:
1. Remember becoming debt free is a process. It takes time to get into debt and it will take time to get out of debt. Certain debts such as a mortgage will take a lengthy period of time. You can still consider your self to be mostly debt free if you have managed to terminate all unsecured debt.

2. Setting financial goals is an extremely important process in becoming debt free. It doesn’t matter who you are, what your income is or what your debt level is, financial goals are essential.
These goals should include:
a. How long until I am debt free
b. How to set up an emergency fund for times when I have a significant financial issue (this will help you stay debt free once you have accomplished that)
c. What are my long term goals ?
d. What would I do if I lost my job, what is my financial plan?

3. What lifestyle changes will need to be done in order to live a debt free life. What lessons can I learn from those around me? Who can I involve in my decisions (spouse, children) to ensure I stay on track?

4. Do I feel like I am sacrificing a lot to be debt free. How else can I look at this in order to feel good about my financial decisions and not feel deprived?
