GUEST – Bruce Matthews, the Deputy Registrar at Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO)

TOPIC – Taking the right steps when buying or selling a home.

INFO – Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO). We are the not-for-profit organization that oversees real estate in the province on behalf of the Ontario government.

Real Estate Council of Ontario, recently conducted a survey that found people wanting to buy a home are willing to sacrifice a lot – including entertainment, vacations and electronics to make home ownership reality.

ZOOMERS may have been in their home for many years and are ready to down-size – or perhaps they are helping to guide their children through the buying process. However, with an active real estate market, home buyers don’t always take the time to ask all the right questions or do their homework before they buy a property. Sometimes skipping steps, like a home inspection, can result in unexpected costs and hassles.

Bruce Matthews, the Deputy Registrar at RECO will talk about some of the common mistakes made during the buying and selling process and our recommended tips for a worry-free buying or selling experience.

Additional information can be found at reco.on.ca. RECO’s core purpose is to foster confidence and uphold integrity in real estate transactions.

GUEST – PC Energy Critic and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli

TOPIC – Bigger Fit Program equals bigger hydro bills

NORTH BAY – PC Energy Critic and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli condemned today’s announcement by the Liberal government that it plans to expand its costly Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) program next year.

“There’s no way the lame-duck Premier’s lame-duck Energy Minister should be issuing policy directives of this magnitude at this time,” Fedeli said of the decision to accept applications for more large-scale FIT contracts in 2013.

Fedeli says the bottom line for Ontarians will be higher hydro bills, noting the government’s 2010 Fall Economic Statement forecast the cost of hydro would increase 46% over five years, with most of that increase due to green energy.

“We’re already paying current FIT developers two to 10 times the cost of power to supply wind and solar energy when we don’t need it,” Fedeli said.

“But because they get priority on the power grid, we end up selling our surplus electricity at a loss to Quebec and the United States,” Fedeli added.

“The Auditor General tells us we lost $1.8 billion over six years selling surplus power to our neighbours, who then use that cheaper power to compete even harder against Ontario for investment. FIT subsidies quite frankly are killing jobs in Ontario.”

Deputy PC Critic for Green Energy Lisa Thompson (Huron-Bruce) says this development only strengthens the argument for an immediate moratorium on any further wind power development in Ontario.

“This decision is completely irresponsible given Health Canada is in the middle of studying the potential health impacts of wind turbines,” Thompson said.

“It’s concrete proof of the total lack of respect the Liberals have for residents of rural Ontario. Our Leader Tim Hudak remains committed to cancelling the unaffordable FIT program.”
