TOPIC – Opposition to Proposed Pickering Airport.
INFO
On June 11, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced, at a closed press conference in Claremont ON, that the Pickering Airport, first announced in 1972 and shelved in 1975, will be going ahead after all. Some of the Federal Lands are to go to the new Rouge National Park, some to unspecified “economic development”, and the rest — an area more than twice the size of Pearson — to an airport. No consultation, no environ-mental assessment, no objective studies of need or of Pearson’s efficiency or true capacity limits, no concern that this plan would destroy rare, PRIME foodland on the doorstep of Canada’s largest city. He called this a responsible, balanced approach. We call it an irresponsible, uninformed decision. And we intend to fight it until we win.
